Dr. Joseph Helak is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Echocardiography. Born in Buffalo, NY, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Canisius College, a small college in Buffalo. He attended Medical School at the SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at SUNY Upstate Medical Center and completed his Cardiology Fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Following this, he returned to SUNY Upstate Medical Center and was an Assistant Professor of Medicine.
In 1983, Dr. Helak moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, joining Wilmington Health Associates. In 1987, he was instrumental in performing the first cardiac catheterization at New Hanover Hospital. He practiced in Wilmington until 2004. He then joined the Sanger Clinic and practiced cardiology in their clinic in Boone, North Carolina, until 2022. Dr. Helak partially retired from the practice of cardiology in February 2022. After retirement, he has participated in seeing patients at the free clinic in Wilmington a half a day a month. He is excited to work with Dr. Buchanan at Coastal Cardiovascular Associates and believes he has much to offer, providing the highest quality of cardiovascular care to the local community.
